Chennai, March 17th, 2025: : Iswarya Hospital, a super speciality hospital at OMR, Chennai has successfully performed a complex cardiac surgery to remove a Lemon sized myxoma tumor from the heart of a 63-year-old patient. The surgery was conducted by a team of cardiac surgeons headed by Dr S Muthukkumaran, the surgery marks a crucial turning point in the patient’s recovery after his long battle with heart issues caused by the benign tumor which was not deducted until the patient was admitted at Iswarya Hospital. The 63-year-old patient, resident of Chennai, was experiencing difficulty walking for a few minutes. He collapsed a few times while walking, but he would recover after being made to lie down in bed. His family was perplexed by his health status because, except from breathing difficulties when walking, he had no serious medical conditions. The patient developed a sudden, high fever and was taken to a private hospital in Chennai for treatment. The hospital’s doctors determined that the patient had pneumonia and began treating him, but the fever did not go away even after treatment for a few days, and his condition worsened in due course at the hospital.

The patient was referred to Iswarya Hospital, Dr S Muthukkumaran, Consultant, Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgeon at Iswarya Hospital examined the patient, the cardiac CT scan and 2D ECHO of the patient’s revealed a ball-sized tumour in the heart that was obstructing blood flow to the heart valves, causing shortness of breath. The tumour was growing in the heart and, if left untreated, would have spread to other organs. The condition is called cardiac myxoma and it is a rare benign tumour that usually develops in the left atrium of the heart. The patient’s family was briefed on the complex surgery. The surgery was performed by Dr S Muthukkumaran, Dr R.S.Sandheep, and his team, who successfully removed the tumor, restoring proper circulation and heart function. The patient has now recovered completely, and he has regained full mobility.
