Gleneagles Hospital Chennai and Vellore Institute of Technology, University (VITU) Forge Strategic Partnership to Advance AI-Driven Neuroscience Innovation
- The MoU between VIT University and Gleneagles Hospital Chennai aims to accelerate the development of affordable, AI-enabled healthcare technologies, focusing on enhancing diagnostic precision, optimizing treatment protocols, and ultimately improving patient outcomes while reducing the cost of care.
Chennai, 22 May 2025 — In a major step aimed at transforming India’s healthcare ecosystem, Vellore Institute of Technology, University (VITU) and Gleneagles Hospital Chennai have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on research and innovation at the intersection of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Neurosciences.
The MoU was officially signed by Dr. Nageshwar Rao, CEO, Gleneagles Hospital Chennai, and Dr. T. Thyagarajan, Pro Vice-Chancellor of VIT University. The ceremony was attended by senior representatives from both institutions, including Dr. Dinesh Nayak, Dr. Sangeetha, and Dr. Natesan Damodaran from Gleneagles Hospital Chennai, and Dr. Shridevi, Dr. Ganesan, and Dr. Suganya from VIT.
Dr. Nageshwar Rao, CEO, Gleneagles Hospital Chennai, said, “The need of the hour is a strong tie-up between technology and the healthcare system in India. This collaboration reflects our commitment to bringing cutting-edge, affordable solutions to real-world clinical challenges.” The partnership aims to create a strong, sustainable framework where clinicians and engineers co-develop solutions to some of the most complex neurological and chronic conditions affecting patients today.
The collaboration will focus on several key areas of research and development, including neuroinformatics and brain imaging, AI and machine learning applications in healthcare, wearable and IoT-based medical devices, rehabilitation and gait-assistive technologies, and AR/VR-based diagnostic frameworks. These innovations will support specialties such as epilepsy care, neuro-oncology, neurorehabilitation, and cognitive health monitoring, enabling timely intervention and improved long-term patient outcomes.
Under this partnership, Gleneagles Hospital Chennai will provide real-world clinical problem statements and access to its state-of-the-art medical infrastructure. Its team of neurologists, neurosurgeons, and rehabilitation experts will mentor VIT students and faculty, ensuring that all solutions are developed with a strong foundation in medical science and clinical relevance. The hospital will also guide the validation process for prototypes and support clinical trials to bring solutions from concept to bedside.
VIT University, known for its excellence in engineering and applied sciences, will mobilize its faculty, researchers, and high-performing students to co-develop these healthcare technologies. The university will lead the design and development of system architectures, software algorithms, and data-driven platforms that address the challenges identified by Gleneagles Hospital Chennai. Additionally, VIT will contribute to academic research, intellectual property generation, and commercialization efforts to ensure that these solutions are scalable and accessible.
This MoU signifies more than just academic collaboration—it represents a model for how India’s healthcare and technology sectors can work together to deliver meaningful, patient-centric solutions. By bridging the gap between medical challenges and engineering expertise, VIT and Gleneagles Hospital Chennai aim to set a national benchmark for innovation in AI-enabled healthcare.
The partnership is also expected to play a vital role in workforce development by training the next generation of clinicians, biomedical engineers, and data scientists who are equipped to address tomorrow’s healthcare challenges.
Together, VIT University and Gleneagles Hospital Chennai are laying the foundation for a future where technology and medicine converge to deliver better care, faster diagnoses, and more hopeful outcomes for patients across India and beyond.
